The wife of late singer Chris Cornell is opening up about her final conversation with the Soundgarden frontman in a heartbreaking new interview. 

Vicky Cornell told People that just minutes before her husband was found dead inside the bathroom of his Detroit hotel, he woke her up by triggering the lights in their New York townhouse with his phone. 

She then called him to find out what was happening, and said that she did not recognize the man on the other end of the phone.

'He was on a rant,' said Vicky. 

'I said, "You need to tell me what you took," and he just got mean. That wasn't my Chris.'

Vicky was so concerned that she called his bodyguard to find out what was happening, and then sent him to check on Chris in his room.

Martin Kirsten had to break down two dears to get to Cornell, but by then it was too late.

He was found slumped over in his bathroom and soon after was declared dead at the scene.

Vicky said that her husband had been sober since 2009, but she had noticed slight changes in him over the year before his death, which is when he began taking Ativan to help sleep.

He was also very much looking forward to an upcoming family trip to Disney World, with travel having become a big part of the family's life once Chris got sober.

'In 2009 we'd had our babies and I said, "No more. I don't want to hear about trains falling off the tracks,"' explained Vicky.

'I said, "Make a decision."'

Chris chose his family over drugs and alcohol, and it made for a great family life, said his wife.

'He was completely present. He would literally come offstage and be sweating and I'd be like "here" and hand over the baby,' said Vicky.

'Other rock-star dads would have separate rooms from their kids. My son Chris slept in our room up until six months ago.'

Vicky then added: 'He loved his children and me more than anything in the world.'

The pair were married in 2004, just one year after they met in 2003 when Vicky was working an afterparty for Chris' band Audioslave.

Chris had a daughter Lily, now 17, from his first marriage to Susan Silver when he met Vicky - the mother of his daughter Toni, 12, and 11-year-old Chris.

'They were attached at the hip,' Vicky said of her husband and Toni.

'They know he would never have left them like that. That's what's keeping them as strong as they are.' 

Vicky believes that in the end it was a relapse that took her husband's lie. 

'Addiction is a disease,' she said in her interview. 

'I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure other children don't have to cry like mine have cried.'

Vicky also shared the last note she got from her husband, written inside her Mother's Day card.

'To my wife and whole universe, my child bride who became the most amazing mother anyone could ever imagine,' wrote Chris.

'Your love and respect inspire awe and a deep sense of joy to see you blossom into the lioness you have become, both nurturing and warm but the fiercest of protectors.'

He then added: 'We are all fortunate to bask in the warm glow of your bright light!'

Chris signed the card by writing: 'From your loving husband and other half.' 

A medical examiner ruled at the time of his death that Chris had hanged himself after he was found on his bathroom floor with 'a band around his neck'.

Cornell family attorney Kirk Pasich had earlier said Detroit legal officials had denied his request for police and toxicology reports because the investigation remained open.

Pasich said the family had not seen any police or coroner's paperwork on the case, and 'the family remains mystified that the medical examiner announced a cause of death when the full autopsy report has not been completed.' 

The toxicology report showed that Chris had traces of Naloxone (a narcotic overdose remedy), Butalbital (sedative), Lorazepam (Ativan), Pseudoephedrine (decongestant) and barbiturates in his system when he died.
